LETTER: Mia Gregerson makes statement about appointment to 33rd District

We received the following statement via email on Tuesday, Dec. 17 from SeaTac City Councilmember Mia Gregerson, who was just appointed as State Representative for the 33rd Legislative District:

I want to thank the 33rd District Democrats and the King County Council for their work on the appointment process to replace Rep. Dave Upthegrove. I am honored to serve as State Representative for the 33rd Legislative District.

I also appreciate going through the process with Elizabeth Albertson and Omaha Sternberg. Elizabeth brought her experience as a Kent City councilmember and a breadth of knowledge on a diverse set of issues to the process. I would love to work with her more closely and learn more from her as I go through my first session in the state legislature. Omaha Sternberg and I talked today on the phone about continuing to work and support the progressive values of the 33rd District Democrats.

We have many challenges facing South King County including investing in SR 509 and SR 167; implementing the Affordable Care Act; and ensuring economic fairness. I am excited to hit the ground running as the appointed State Representative from the 33rd Legislative District.

I was about to converse with you, however, after viewing your site it is clear that your mind is made up and heart set in stone.

For the record, I am a Dem PCO in the 33rd (former SeaTac resident and current Burien resident) and my dad is a republican. I understand not seeing eye to eye with you Mr Kovacs, however, I feel like you wouldn’t bring your ears to any discussion we might have. So to you I say good day.

And voted up by…not nearly as many (as of this writing). It doesn’t exactly look like too many people are jumping to your defense.

Mr. Kovacs, even if you ARE right about all the people you demonize, I’d think you would have learned by now that the dismissive, libelous, and insinuating language you use here and on your website does not reflect well on those who otherwise share your views, and it doesn’t exactly win any new converts. Publicly calling people hags, liars, witches, mama’s boys, cult members, and porn stars makes who I would call “normal” people (“misfits” to you?) a little unsure about whose mental state is unstable. It also makes “normal” people a little hesitant to take you up on your invitation to join you for coffee.

Just my opinion. I know I can count on at least a few down-votes myself.

Mr. Kovacs, I’m sorry you feel my opinions are worthless. Your ready disregard for opposing opinions is another reason people are reluctant to sit down and talk with you. Joey Martinez is just another example.

Mr. Kovacs, I see you are doubling down on making crude and unsupported insinuations. It is unfortunate that you continue to make that choice.

WOW Mr Kovacs, kinda touchy subject huh? Just an FYI, I do believe in some of the same things you say, but its kinda difficult to have your back when you call people names and slander people. It also hurts those council members that you associate with cause of your remarks.

Isn’t that funny that all the posts that I know were against Ms. Gregorson have been hidden “due to low comment rating”. So we got the comment section back but not really!! I thought that going to King County we’d get rid of her in SeaTac. No such luck. She gets to do both! Really, is that even legal?

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 8

  7. Outside Observer says:

    Kathy Brave,

The comments are still there and accessible to anyone who wants to read them. Freedom of Speech does not guarantee that people will like what you say, and the commenting rules and procedures were clearly stated by the website administrators.

To your second point, yes it is legal for Counilmember Gregerson to hold both offices. Under Article II, Sections 7 and 14 of the Washington State Constitution, the only restrictions placed on state legislators is that they are legal residents and eligible voters in their districts, and hold no federal civil or military office at the same time as the state office. Since being a SeaTac councilperson is not a federal office, it is perfectly legal to hold both positions at the same time.
