Police say a grenade was found in the white box just left of a traffic cone on the sidewalk in the center of the photo.

A grenade was found in a box near McMicken Heights Elementary School Monday morning (Dec. 28), according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The device – later discovered to possibly be a “dud” training device – was found by a construction worker around 8 a.m.  King County Sheriff’s Office and FBI Bomb Technicians responded to the scene and x-rayed it.

…and after.

After analyzing the x-rays it could not be determine if the device contained explosives. The device was moved to a remote location and detonated. After detonation it was determined the device did not contain explosives. The grenade appeared to be an old cast iron grenade and may have been a training device.

A King County Sheriff’s Office bomb technician said even though the device did not contain explosives it is still a crime to “place a hoax device.”  An investigation will be conducted to determine who placed the device at the scene.
