Sierra Club Forum on fracking in South King County will be Wednesday night

The Sierra Club will be holding a community forum to discuss fracking in South King County tonight – Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Valley View Library.

Here’s more info:

Did you know that a big fracked gas refinery proposed for the Columbia River Gorge could bring gas pipelines through South King County?

The world’s largest methanol refinery – proposed for Kalama, WA – would consume more gas than any sector of Washington’s economy, inevitably requiring gas pipeline expansions through King county, and opening the floodgates for fracked gas usage and exports in our state. Come find out about this project and how fight it!

A proposal to build the world’s largest methanol refinery on the banks of the Columbia River in Kalama, WA would require new fracked gas pipeline infrastructure in our area. Environmentalists suspect this will be a large new gas pipeline through South King County, causing health issues, environmental destruction and taking land from citizens through eminent domain. The refinery alone would expand Washington’s gas usage by 1/3rd, become the top source of air pollution in Kalama, and bears high risk of explosion and chemical spillage in the Columbia River. In addition, building a new gas pipeline down the I-5 corridor will rationalize more gas infrastructure and export projects, each of which will have dire environmental, climate and human health consequences.

We are holding a community forum about this threat to educate the community, and arm them to fight back. We can stop the proposal in Kalama, we can keep fracked gas out of King County.
