SeaTac City Council unanimously chooses Amina Ahmed as new Councilmember

After an all-day Special Council Meeting on Saturday, Oct. 13, the SeaTac City Council unanimously appointed Amina Ahmed to fill vacant Council Position #5, and complete the current unexpired term.

The appointment took place after the Council interviewed 12 applicants at the public meeting. Originally, there were 15 candidates but Craig Baker, JD Hill Jr and Mario Coluccio withdrew.

Ahmed has been a resident of SeaTac for 5 years and homeowner for 10 years. She is a Human Services and Non-Profit Executive. Ahmed has worked in the human service field in SeaTac since 2002. Councilmember Ahmed will be sworn in at the October 23, 2018 Regular Council Meeting and serve through the certification of the November 2019 General Election.

As we previously reported, Councilmember/Mayor Mike Siefkes stepped down in September due to health reasons, creating the vacancy.

The City of SeaTac has a seven-member City Council elected by residents. The Council chooses from among themselves who will serve as Mayor and Deputy Mayor for a two-year term. The Mayor is recognized as the head of the City for ceremonial purposes and is the chair of the Council Meetings.

The City Councilmembers are the leaders and policy makers elected to represent the community and to concentrate on policy issues that are responsive to the needs and wishes of the residents and businesses. The SeaTac Council makes policy, land use, and budget decisions for the City.

The City Council appoints a full-time City Manager to oversee the daily operations of the City and to advise, implement, and administer the policies adopted by the City Council.

Amina Ahmed is a rock star as far as I am concerned. Her leadership as the founding director of Partner in Employment (PIE), where she works with communities of color to get first generation Americans employed, is groundbreaking work. Her vision, work ethic, and natural smarts, brought this effort to reality, and dozens are helped each month, getting folks employed in living wage jobs. And we all know how important a job can be. It adds stability to family situations and improves social outcomes. Amina has been a leader for years. It is great that the SeaTac Council recognized her strengths and remarkable abilities and added her to the SeaTac City Council.

Good for Amina and Good for SeaTac!!!
