The Great Washington Shake Out Earthquake Drill will be Thursday, Oct. 18

The Great Washington Shake Out Earthquake Drill will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, starting at 10:18 a.m., when City of SeaTac staff will conduct an earthquake drill.

At 10:18 a.m. sharp, all employees at SeaTac City Hall will Drop, Cover, and Hold on for one minute. They will not be evacuating the building during this drill.

If you would like to participate in your own workspace or home, here is a guide for earthquake safety:

  1. DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.
  2. COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand. Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs
    • If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter
    • If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows)
  3. HOLD ON (1 minute or until shaking stops)
    • Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts
    • No shelter: hold onto your head and neck with both arms and hands.

This exercise is also a great reminder of the need to be prepared, both at home and at work. We don’t always know when a disaster will strike, but we can be ready, resilient, and safe. Discuss being prepared with your family. Make a plan to stay safe and communicate your well-being and location. You can build a kit to keep everyone sustained and comfortable and also plan to help each other.
