DESCRIPTION:The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ national food drive on Saturday\, May 14. \nNALC’s food drive\, which was first held in 1983\, helps feed millions of Americans. \nThis is the country’s largest one-day food drive\, and provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need by leaving donations of non-perishable food next to your mailbox on May 14. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes\, and distribute them to local food banks\, pantries\, shelters and churches. \nThe Letter Carriers’ food drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10\,000 cities and towns in all 50 states\, the District of Columbia\, Puerto Rico\, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Hunger affects 1 in 8 Americans\, including millions of children\, senior citizens and veterans. \nIn the 30 years since it began\, the food drive has collected about 1.82 billion pounds of food for struggling residents. \nThe need is as great as ever\, given the pandemic-caused economic dislocations of the past two years. The traditional food drive is returning this year after a two-year hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020 and 2021\, it was replaced by NALC’s donor drive\, in which those wishing to help made online donations to local food pantries. \n“Letter carriers are a part of every neighborhood in the nation\,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said\, “and we see the growing need for food assistance in our communities. On Saturday\, May 14\, NALC invites everyone to participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Together\, we can help stamp out hunger in America.” \nThe timing is important\, with food banks\, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter holidays and with summer approaching\, when most school meal programs are suspended. \nOn May 14\, as they deliver mail\, the nation’s 200\,000 letter carriers will collect the donations that residents have left near their mailboxes. People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods\, such as canned soup\, canned vegetables\, canned meats and fish\, pasta\, rice or cereal next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on Saturday. DESCRIPTION:Salmon raised by the City of SeaTac will be released into the wild into Des Moines Creek this Saturday\, May 14\, 2022 at 11 a.m.  \nThis is the third year in a row that the city has raised salmon for release into the wild. \nSalmon are an important part of the Pacific Northwest Ecosystem and have been for hundreds of years. In recent years\, salmon populations have decreased. Because of this\, local hatcheries help raise salmon eggs for release into creeks and the Puget Sound to keep fish populations stable. \nThe City of SeaTac picked up Coho salmon eggs on Jan. 14 from the Soos Creek Hatchery and brought them to their tank at the SeaTac Community Center. \nSeaTac elected officials and Public Works staff will host the public at at Des Moines Creek Trail and make their way to the creek-bed to release the fish. The public will be able to participate in counting the salmon and watch as they are released them into the stream. \nA shuttle will be available to transport people from Angle Lake Park to the site starting at 10:30 a.m. because parking is limited at the park. \nWHEN: Saturday\, May 14\, 2022: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nWHAT: SeaTac Public Works will release 250 salmon the City raised at the SeaTac Community Center into the wild via Des Moines Creek (map below). \nWHERE: Des Moines Creek Trail 2151 S. 200th Street:
