He is living with his cancer diagnosis under the watchful eye of the Seattle Cancer Care Center\, Fred Hutch\, and UW Medical Center\, and has received 3 rounds of radiation on his spinal tumor and 6 rounds of chemo in 2021. \nHuff says\, “2022 was the best year of my life!”\n \nWhile receiving immunotherapy and bone density therapy sessions in 3-week cycles\, Huff and the Huff Motorsports racing teams also accomplished some amazing feats: \n\nFaster Than Cancer Electric Dragster set 2 new World Speed Records as the only 200+mph electric dragster.\nFaster Than Cancer Electric Dragster appeared at 4 NHRA Nationals Events from coast-to-coast.\nFaster Than Cancer Hydroplane e350 wins the APBA National Championship.\nHuff with Destination Harley-Davidson designed and built a new Superhooligan Motorcycle for competition.\n\n \nIn 2022\, Huff – along with Des Moines resident Jill Andrews\, and Bardi Martin (formerly of Candlebox) – formed the Faster Than Cancer Foundation 501c3 to inspire\, educate and support our community living with a cancer diagnosis along with a scholarship program for trades/vocational education. This is an extension of Steve’s lifelong dedication to working with youth including neurodivergent youth. \n \nSummer Waterland Festival\, Seafair-sanctioned community events include \n\nWaterland Car Show – July 9\, 2023 at Des Moines Marina.\nWaterland Jr Parade and Grand Parade – Saturday\, July 22\, 2023 – Starting at 5:45 p.m. along Marine View Drive.\nWaterland Children’s Event Pirates Cove – Saturday\, July 22nd 12 – 4 p.m. at the Des Moines Beach Park.\nWaterland BBQ – Sunday\, July 23\, 2023 – 12 – 5 p.m. at the Marina Beach Park.\n\nHuff adds: \n“I am humbled and honored to accept the title of Grand Marshal at the Waterland Parade. \n“If someone had said this would happen to me back when I was living and having Waterland parties in the old apt on Marine View Drive above what is now Eight Dive Shop\, I would have laughed. \n“We’ve come a long way and I can’t thank Destination Des Moines enough for giving me this honor. \n“And Thank You to all of the Des Moines businesses that have supported our racing throughout the years.” \nFind all of the information about Destination Des Moines (DDM) Community Events and the Waterland Festival Summer Events at www.DestinationDesMoines.org. \nTony Hettler\, President\, said: \n“DDM is thrilled and honored to have Steve Huff as our 2023 Grand Marshal.” \nDestination Des Moines is a volunteer organization that provides free family-friendly events in the Des Moines Community. SUMMARY:'Bootlegger’s Ball' returns Dec. 8; will feature local Prohibition Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Repeal of Prohibition will once again be celebrated with a party on Thursday\, Dec. 8\, 2022\, at the Washington State Historical Museum in Tacoma. \nIn addition to imbibing at the Museum’s own version of a speakeasy (The Blind Marmot\, where you can drink from your own History After Hours glass)\, the evening features live music by The Happy Sinners and\, according to WSHM\,\, “more roaring 20s fun!” \nThe event also features Des Moines attorney\, filmmaker\, and public speaker Steve Edmiston\, sharing fascinating tales of the Northwest’s Rumrunning King\, Roy Olmstead\, that include little known stories of Olmstead’s secret “smuggler’s paradise” in Highline\, and his stunning Thanksgiving Day arrest at the Woodmont Dock in Des Moines. \nEdmiston has been sharing stories of “The Good Bootlegger” and Prohibition in the Northwest throughout Washington State for the past two years as a member of the Humanities Washington Speaker’s Bureau. \n“One of the reasons I love sharing the Olmstead story is the powerful connection to our South King County communities\,” he said. “It’s amazing to me how much of our hyperlocal prohibition history has been forgotten\, and how much our model of rumrunning and bootlegging in the 1920s differed from the Al Capone model of organized crime fueled by violence. What better way to experience this history than to live it\, speakeasy style\, at the Ball.” \nEvent details: \nWHAT: Washington State Historical Museum Bootleggers’ Ball! \nWHEN: Thursday\, Dec. 8\, 2022\, 7-10 p.m. \nWHERE: Washington State History Museum\, 1911 Pacific Avenue\, Tacoma\, WA (map below). \nTICKETS: \n\n\n\n$20 for members\n$25 pre-registration\, $30 at the door\nAdults 21+ only\, ID required\n\n\n\nMore info: https://www.washingtonhistory.org/event/bootleggers-ball/ \nTickets: https://49882.blackbaudhosting.com/49882/Bootleggers-Ball \n\nGet in the mood with this short film by Steve Edmiston for Seattle Southside Scenes: \n \n \nAbout Washington State Historical Society\nFounded in 1891 and now into its second century of service\, the Washington State Historical Society is dedicated to collecting\, preserving\, and vividly presenting Washington’s rich and storied history. The Historical Society offers a variety of services to researchers\, historians\, scholars\, and lifelong learners\, as well as operating the State History Research Center and the Washington State History Museum. The Society partners with communities to explore how history connects us all. \nAbout Steve Edmiston\nSteve is a business and entertainment lawyer with Bracepoint Law\, an indie film screenwriter and producer\, founder of Quadrant45 and The Good Bootlegger’s Guild. Steve collaborated with Director Scott Schaefer on local favorite film The Maury Island Incident. He currently serves on the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau\, and has keynoted for the Washington State Historical Museum/Society\, Pacific Northwest History Conference\, Smith Tower Rumrunner’s Club\, McMenamins History Pubs\, and appeared on the Travel Channel’s Legendary Locations. Steve lives in Des Moines\, near the site of Olmstead’s final arrest. He remains endlessly fascinated by the boldness of Roy Olmstead’s business plan\, and he is collaborating with Schaefer to develop a feature film inspired by Olmstead’s life.

SUMMARY:WABI Weekday Walkers will walk North SeaTac Park on Wed.\, Nov. 16
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nLet’s wander through North SeaTac Park for our next WABI Weekday Walkers outing on Wednesday\, Nov. 16\, 2022. \nThis lovely park is located just east of Burien\, in neighboring SeaTac. \nIn 2021\, The Seattle Times reported: \nThe area that makes up North SeaTac Park has long been intertwined with the Port of Seattle. Originally\, the park land was a residential area that was cleared of houses beginning in the 1970s due to aviation safety regulations. It remained abandoned for about 20 years until it was reborn as North SeaTac Park in 1998. \nToday\, the park features a peaceful setting with a paved\, flat trail (part of West Side Trail) that travels through wooded areas and past a playground\, ball fields\, and a frisbee golf course. West Side Trail starts several miles south of SeaTac\, following along Des Moines Memorial Drive and terminating\, at least for now\, at North SeaTac Park. \nWe’ll meet at the Sunset Park parking lot\, just south of North SeaTac Park. West Side Trail passes by the parking lot\, crossing over S 136th St. and continuing along the west side of North SeaTac Park. We will follow the trail through the park for about 2 miles. The walk should take 45-60 minutes. \nDate: Wednesday\, November 16\, 2022\nTime: Meet 5-10 minutes before 9:00 so we can start walking promptly at 9:00 am.\nMeeting Place: Sunset Park parking lot: 13800 16th Ave S\, SeaTac \nFor questions\, comments and suggestions\, please contact: \n\n\n\n\n\nAudrey Lipps at weekdaywalkers@wabiburien.org\nMaureen Hoffmann at info@wabiburien.org
