SUMMARY:'Bootlegger’s Ball' returns Dec. 8; will feature local Prohibition Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Repeal of Prohibition will once again be celebrated with a party on Thursday\, Dec. 8\, 2022\, at the Washington State Historical Museum in Tacoma. \nIn addition to imbibing at the Museum’s own version of a speakeasy (The Blind Marmot\, where you can drink from your own History After Hours glass)\, the evening features live music by The Happy Sinners and\, according to WSHM\,\, “more roaring 20s fun!” \nThe event also features Des Moines attorney\, filmmaker\, and public speaker Steve Edmiston\, sharing fascinating tales of the Northwest’s Rumrunning King\, Roy Olmstead\, that include little known stories of Olmstead’s secret “smuggler’s paradise” in Highline\, and his stunning Thanksgiving Day arrest at the Woodmont Dock in Des Moines. \nEdmiston has been sharing stories of “The Good Bootlegger” and Prohibition in the Northwest throughout Washington State for the past two years as a member of the Humanities Washington Speaker’s Bureau. \n“One of the reasons I love sharing the Olmstead story is the powerful connection to our South King County communities\,” he said. “It’s amazing to me how much of our hyperlocal prohibition history has been forgotten\, and how much our model of rumrunning and bootlegging in the 1920s differed from the Al Capone model of organized crime fueled by violence. What better way to experience this history than to live it\, speakeasy style\, at the Ball.” \nEvent details: \nWHAT: Washington State Historical Museum Bootleggers’ Ball! \nWHEN: Thursday\, Dec. 8\, 2022\, 7-10 p.m. \nWHERE: Washington State History Museum\, 1911 Pacific Avenue\, Tacoma\, WA (map below). \nTICKETS: \n\n\n\n$20 for members\n$25 pre-registration\, $30 at the door\nAdults 21+ only\, ID required\n\n\n\nMore info: https://www.washingtonhistory.org/event/bootleggers-ball/ \nTickets: https://49882.blackbaudhosting.com/49882/Bootleggers-Ball \n\nGet in the mood with this short film by Steve Edmiston for Seattle Southside Scenes: \n \n \nAbout Washington State Historical Society\nFounded in 1891 and now into its second century of service\, the Washington State Historical Society is dedicated to collecting\, preserving\, and vividly presenting Washington’s rich and storied history. The Historical Society offers a variety of services to researchers\, historians\, scholars\, and lifelong learners\, as well as operating the State History Research Center and the Washington State History Museum. The Society partners with communities to explore how history connects us all. \nAbout Steve Edmiston\nSteve is a business and entertainment lawyer with Bracepoint Law\, an indie film screenwriter and producer\, founder of Quadrant45 and The Good Bootlegger’s Guild. Steve collaborated with Director Scott Schaefer on local favorite film The Maury Island Incident. He currently serves on the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau\, and has keynoted for the Washington State Historical Museum/Society\, Pacific Northwest History Conference\, Smith Tower Rumrunner’s Club\, McMenamins History Pubs\, and appeared on the Travel Channel’s Legendary Locations. Steve lives in Des Moines\, near the site of Olmstead’s final arrest. He remains endlessly fascinated by the boldness of Roy Olmstead’s business plan\, and he is collaborating with Schaefer to develop a feature film inspired by Olmstead’s life.

SUMMARY:WABI Weekday Walkers will walk North SeaTac Park on Wed.\, Nov. 16
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nLet’s wander through North SeaTac Park for our next WABI Weekday Walkers outing on Wednesday\, Nov. 16\, 2022. \nThis lovely park is located just east of Burien\, in neighboring SeaTac. \nIn 2021\, The Seattle Times reported: \nThe area that makes up North SeaTac Park has long been intertwined with the Port of Seattle. Originally\, the park land was a residential area that was cleared of houses beginning in the 1970s due to aviation safety regulations. It remained abandoned for about 20 years until it was reborn as North SeaTac Park in 1998. \nToday\, the park features a peaceful setting with a paved\, flat trail (part of West Side Trail) that travels through wooded areas and past a playground\, ball fields\, and a frisbee golf course. West Side Trail starts several miles south of SeaTac\, following along Des Moines Memorial Drive and terminating\, at least for now\, at North SeaTac Park. \nWe’ll meet at the Sunset Park parking lot\, just south of North SeaTac Park. West Side Trail passes by the parking lot\, crossing over S 136th St. and continuing along the west side of North SeaTac Park. We will follow the trail through the park for about 2 miles. The walk should take 45-60 minutes. \nDate: Wednesday\, November 16\, 2022\nTime: Meet 5-10 minutes before 9:00 so we can start walking promptly at 9:00 am.\nMeeting Place: Sunset Park parking lot: 13800 16th Ave S\, SeaTac \nFor questions\, comments and suggestions\, please contact: \n\n\n\n\n\nAudrey Lipps at weekdaywalkers@wabiburien.org\nMaureen Hoffmann at info@wabiburien.org

SUMMARY:Celebrate North SeaTac Park's Birthday on Sunday\, Aug. 21
DESCRIPTION:Defenders of North SeaTac Park will be holding gathering to celebrate and protect the park and treeson Sunday\, Aug. 21\, 2022\, from 1 – 4 p.m. at the picnic shelter in North SeaTac Park. \nNorth SeaTac Park\, 200+ acres filled with play and community gathering spaces\, wetlands and tributaries of Miller Creek\, towering trees and winding trails\, was officially opened in 1998. That makes it almost 25-years-old! \n“Let’s gather to celebrate and call for permanently protecting it.” \nShare a slice of cake\, hear some music\, hang a wish for the park on a tree\, get your face painted. If you enjoy music-making\, bring your voice or acoustic guitar and join in the Happy Birthday and Big Yellow Taxi sing-alongs led by Mike Wold of Just Us Singers. And bring a jug of water to nourish a newly-planted tree near the picnic shelter! \nBy celebrating this park and our community trees\, we make it more likely that they will be here for the next 25 years. \nMany people don’t know that North SeaTac Park – one of the largest open green spaces in South King County – is zoned aviation commercial and that a 55-acre parcel of the park\, south of S. 136th Street and near Tub Lake Bog\, can be taken out of park use “at any time” for airport expansion. Eventually\, the entire park can be developed as the airport grows. In addition\, right now\, the Port of Seattle has proposals in its “Sustainable Airport Master Plan” for airport expansion on an estimated 75-acres of mostly tree-covered land in SeaTac\, much of it near the park. \n“Joni Mitchell sang in Big Yellow Taxi that we don’t know what we’ve got till it’s gone. Let’s change that song!” \nMore info and a petiton to sign to protect this park and community trees at: https://KCTreeEquity.org \nPresented by Defenders of North SeaTac Park. \n \nMeet at the picnic shelter in North SeaTac Park\, near S. 128th St. and Des Moines Memorial Dr. S. Not to forget enjoying a cold drink in the beer and wine garden while tapping your toes to live music. Acts include Patrizia Coletta and Gianfranco Foddai playing with Italian flare. \nWhile on-site\, be sure to check out the historic displays inside the Casa depicting the rich heritage of Italian immigrants in Seattle and the South end. Don’t forget to browse the Italian market with direct imports of a variety of Italian merchandise from pasta to pannocchie\, and so much more in-between. \nParking and entry are FREE\, and proceeds go to continue the construction of the planned Banquet Hall and general Casa support so this event fits the bill for most any budget. SUMMARY:Volunteers needed to help restore North SeaTac Park on Sunday\, July 31
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to help transform a forest this Sunday\, July 31\, 2022\, from 3 – 5 p.m. at North SeaTac Park\, a 200+ urban oasis under the flight paths of Sea-Tac Airport \n“The trees here clean\, quiet\, and cool the air – true guardians of the community!” \nVolunteers will work in a corner of the park\, under towering poplars and Douglas Fir\, that was almost completely overrun with ivy that carpeted the ground and climbed the tree trunks until residents began to transform it in early 2021. On Green SeaTac Day this fall\, volunteers planted white pine\, cedar\, snowberries\, fringe cup and more on the newly-cleared land. \n“At this event\, we’ll work to protect trees and other native plants in previously cleared areas by removing re-emerging weeds. We may expand the cleared area to provide more of a buffer for this previously cleared land.” \nThis event is open to the public\, and all ages are invited. \nWhat to Bring\nWear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes\, long sleeves and pants. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Hats are recommended. Rain gear may be needed. Bring gardening gloves or hand tools (clippers especially)\, if you have them. No worries if not – we’ll have some for you to use. Due to Covid-19 restrictions\, we won’t have bottled water or snacks\, so bring what you need! \nWhere to Meet\nMeet in the park at the NE corner of Des Moines Memorial Dr. S. and S. 136th St. in SeaTac. If you arrive after the event starts\, we’re about 100 – 150 yards down a dirt trail into the trees (not the paved trail). Lat/Long can be entered into Google maps: 47°28’57.1″N 122°18’45.5″W. Or call Noemie at 253-653-6028. \nWhere to Park\nThere’s parking on S. 136th St. right near the meeting place. Additional parking within sight across S.136th St. by the ballfield is also usually available. SUMMARY:See BAT Theatre's 'The Play's the Thing' FREE at Angle Lake Park July 29
DESCRIPTION:BAT Theatre will be bringing the comedy The Play’s the Thing to various South King County parks this summer\, including SeaTac. \nMore cities are joining in\, but mark your calendar for these three FREE performances: \n\n\n\nFriday\, July 29\, 7 p.m.: City of SeaTac\, Angle Lake Park\nSunday\, Aug. 14\, 5 p.m.: City of Normandy Park\, Marvista Park\nSunday\, Aug. 21\, 3 p.m.: City of Des Moines\, Des Moines Beach Park\n\n\n\nThis comedy revolves around Albert\, a young composer of a new show\, and the playwright\, Sandor. When Albert unexpectedly arrives to see his fiancée\, Ilona\, he heartbreakingly overhears her sharing her affection with another man\, Almady. \nSandor begins to rewrite reality to save Albert from heartbreak and thus save his new show. Through clever misdirection\, Sandor tries to make it seem this incident was just dialogue in a play and begins to prep his ‘actors’ to take the stage – but will Albert fall for it? \nThis ‘play-within-a-play’ technique will leave you laughing out loud as the lines between reality and mere ‘acting’ blur. The clever use of this technique leads you down twists and turns that set up the hilarious finale. \n“The Play’s the Thing is too Good to miss!” \nMore info here

SUMMARY:Free storytelling workshop at Highline Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:The ‘7 Stories’ storytelling group will be hosting a free storytelling workshop on Wednesday\, July 6\, from 6-7:30 p.m.\, at the Highline Heritage Museum in Burien (map below). \nBarbara and Ron Hammond will lead the workshop. They just celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. \n“Storytelling is a family tradition in both of our birth families\,” they said. “We read and told stories to our four children until the youngest went off to college – starting with the likes of ‘The Carrot Seed’ and ending with Mary Oliver and ‘The Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe.’ Barbara studied storytelling with the great Spencer Shaw at UW as part of her training as a children’s librarian. Ron just wings it.” \nBefore you come to the workshop\, think of a story from your life that can be told in a minute or two. Storytelling is a lot like playing jazz – it requires both careful preparation in getting ready and improvisation in presenting. Barbara and Ron will discuss both aspects and help you hone the story you bring with you into something you would be proud to present. \nWe are never more convincing than when we tell our own stories. Everybody has them. Sharing them is both rewarding and fun but benefits from careful preparation. Spend an hour and a half with two experienced storytellers and pick up some of the tips of the trade. \nWho hasn’t been captivated by a powerful or funny story? ‘7 Stories’ is a night of such storytelling – to build community\, empathy\, and celebrate our diversity. \nEach ‘7 Stories’ night has a theme. Storytellers sign up and are selected in advance. Real stories are mesmerizing and raw. This is not a theatrical performance\, but true-life stories from your friends\, acquaintances\, or someone you have never met. These stories are told from the heart. The program is introduced by our host for the evening\, with a short bio of each storyteller. \nWE NEED YOU. Please consider sharing your true story in the spirit of community and friendship. We will coach/help you as much as you would like. To sign up go to burienculturehub.org/7stories; or email us at 7stories@burienculturehub.org \nUpcoming themes are: \n\n\n\nJuly 22: Coming to America/Adjusting to America\nAug. 26: Saying Yes – Taking Chances\nSept. 23: First Job/Worst Job\nOct. 28: Silver Linings\n\n\n\nTo learn more about ‘7 Stories\, visit http://burienculturehub.org/7stories. \nTo view videos of previous ‘7 Stories’ events\, click here. \nThe Highline Heritage Museum is located at 819 SW 152nd Street in Olde Burien:
