SUMMARY:Celebrate North SeaTac Park's Birthday on Sunday\, Aug. 21
DESCRIPTION:Defenders of North SeaTac Park will be holding gathering to celebrate and protect the park and treeson Sunday\, Aug. 21\, 2022\, from 1 – 4 p.m. at the picnic shelter in North SeaTac Park. \nNorth SeaTac Park\, 200+ acres filled with play and community gathering spaces\, wetlands and tributaries of Miller Creek\, towering trees and winding trails\, was officially opened in 1998. That makes it almost 25-years-old! \n“Let’s gather to celebrate and call for permanently protecting it.” \nShare a slice of cake\, hear some music\, hang a wish for the park on a tree\, get your face painted. If you enjoy music-making\, bring your voice or acoustic guitar and join in the Happy Birthday and Big Yellow Taxi sing-alongs led by Mike Wold of Just Us Singers. And bring a jug of water to nourish a newly-planted tree near the picnic shelter! \nBy celebrating this park and our community trees\, we make it more likely that they will be here for the next 25 years. \nMany people don’t know that North SeaTac Park – one of the largest open green spaces in South King County – is zoned aviation commercial and that a 55-acre parcel of the park\, south of S. 136th Street and near Tub Lake Bog\, can be taken out of park use “at any time” for airport expansion. Eventually\, the entire park can be developed as the airport grows. In addition\, right now\, the Port of Seattle has proposals in its “Sustainable Airport Master Plan” for airport expansion on an estimated 75-acres of mostly tree-covered land in SeaTac\, much of it near the park. \n“Joni Mitchell sang in Big Yellow Taxi that we don’t know what we’ve got till it’s gone. Let’s change that song!” \nMore info and a petiton to sign to protect this park and community trees at: https://KCTreeEquity.org \nPresented by Defenders of North SeaTac Park. \n \nMeet at the picnic shelter in North SeaTac Park\, near S. 128th St. and Des Moines Memorial Dr. S. Not to forget enjoying a cold drink in the beer and wine garden while tapping your toes to live music. Acts include Patrizia Coletta and Gianfranco Foddai playing with Italian flare. \nWhile on-site\, be sure to check out the historic displays inside the Casa depicting the rich heritage of Italian immigrants in Seattle and the South end. Don’t forget to browse the Italian market with direct imports of a variety of Italian merchandise from pasta to pannocchie\, and so much more in-between. \nParking and entry are FREE\, and proceeds go to continue the construction of the planned Banquet Hall and general Casa support so this event fits the bill for most any budget. You can feel great about supporting this community treasure. Make the most of mid-August at Casa Italiana’s Ferragosto\, for before you know it\, summer will draw to a close. \n \nBuon Divertiti a Tutti! \nDance the Italian ‘tarantella‘! \nFresh from the oven – Tutta Bella Pizza! \nAuthentic Italian treats await! \nMore info here: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/casaitalianacc/posts/pfbid02J9nEgz2aButC7dQwU1PtV7pHy7sFm8NPBvivpw2LFUqeWeQDQPExq1E8bm3MnDpSl\nhttps://www.casaitalianacc.org\n\n\n\nCasa Italiana is located at 13028 1st Ave S.: \n  \nEDITOR’S NOTE: Since South King Media’s inception in 2007\, we have provided tens of thousands of dollars worth of FREE promotional and marketing services to local nonprofits and organizations. On Green SeaTac Day this fall\, volunteers planted white pine\, cedar\, snowberries\, fringe cup and more on the newly-cleared land. \n“At this event\, we’ll work to protect trees and other native plants in previously cleared areas by removing re-emerging weeds. SUMMARY:See BAT Theatre's 'The Play's the Thing' FREE at Angle Lake Park July 29
DESCRIPTION:BAT Theatre will be bringing the comedy The Play’s the Thing to various South King County parks this summer\, including SeaTac. \nMore cities are joining in\, but mark your calendar for these three FREE performances: \n\n\n\nFriday\, July 29\, 7 p.m.: City of SeaTac\, Angle Lake Park\nSunday\, Aug. 14\, 5 p.m.: City of Normandy Park\, Marvista Park\nSunday\, Aug. 21\, 3 p.m.: City of Des Moines\, Des Moines Beach Park\n\n\n\nThis comedy revolves around Albert\, a young composer of a new show\, and the playwright\, Sandor. When Albert unexpectedly arrives to see his fiancée\, Ilona\, he heartbreakingly overhears her sharing her affection with another man\, Almady. \nSandor begins to rewrite reality to save Albert from heartbreak and thus save his new show. Through clever misdirection\, Sandor tries to make it seem this incident was just dialogue in a play and begins to prep his ‘actors’ to take the stage – but will Albert fall for it? \nThis ‘play-within-a-play’ technique will leave you laughing out loud as the lines between reality and mere ‘acting’ blur. The clever use of this technique leads you down twists and turns that set up the hilarious finale. \n“The Play’s the Thing is too Good to miss!” \nMore info here

SUMMARY:Free storytelling workshop at Highline Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:The ‘7 Stories’ storytelling group will be hosting a free storytelling workshop on Wednesday\, July 6\, from 6-7:30 p.m.\, at the Highline Heritage Museum in Burien (map below). \nBarbara and Ron Hammond will lead the workshop. They just celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. \n“Storytelling is a family tradition in both of our birth families\,” they said. “We read and told stories to our four children until the youngest went off to college – starting with the likes of ‘The Carrot Seed’ and ending with Mary Oliver and ‘The Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe.’ Barbara studied storytelling with the great Spencer Shaw at UW as part of her training as a children’s librarian. Ron just wings it.” \nBefore you come to the workshop\, think of a story from your life that can be told in a minute or two. Storytelling is a lot like playing jazz – it requires both careful preparation in getting ready and improvisation in presenting. Barbara and Ron will discuss both aspects and help you hone the story you bring with you into something you would be proud to present. \nWe are never more convincing than when we tell our own stories. Everybody has them. Sharing them is both rewarding and fun but benefits from careful preparation. Spend an hour and a half with two experienced storytellers and pick up some of the tips of the trade. \nWho hasn’t been captivated by a powerful or funny story? ‘7 Stories’ is a night of such storytelling – to build community\, empathy\, and celebrate our diversity. \nEach ‘7 Stories’ night has a theme. Storytellers sign up and are selected in advance. Real stories are mesmerizing and raw. This is not a theatrical performance\, but true-life stories from your friends\, acquaintances\, or someone you have never met. These stories are told from the heart. The program is introduced by our host for the evening\, with a short bio of each storyteller. \nWE NEED YOU. Please consider sharing your true story in the spirit of community and friendship. We will coach/help you as much as you would like. To sign up go to burienculturehub.org/7stories; or email us at 7stories@burienculturehub.org \nUpcoming themes are: \n\n\n\nJuly 22: Coming to America/Adjusting to America\nAug. 26: Saying Yes – Taking Chances\nSept. 23: First Job/Worst Job\nOct. 28: Silver Linings\n\n\n\nTo learn more about ‘7 Stories\, visit http://burienculturehub.org/7stories. \nTo view videos of previous ‘7 Stories’ events\, click here. \nThe Highline Heritage Museum is located at 819 SW 152nd Street in Olde Burien:

SUMMARY:'6/22' Party will commemorate 1947 local origins of Men in Black
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy David Rosen\, SlickPix Photography \nA party celebrating the 75th anniversary of the world’s first encounter with the iconic “Men in Black” is set to begin precisely at 6:22 p.m.\, on Wednesday\, June 22\, 2022\, at the Quarterdeck in Des Moines. \n“Because this is the 75th anniversary of both the infamous Maury Island Incident UFO sighting and the birth of the ‘Men in Black’ story\, it made sense to put a real spotlight on this fun and stunning history\,” said Maury Island Incident Historical Society (MIIHS) co-founder Steve Edmiston. “The fact that the so-called ‘Men in Black’ originated here in the Northwest\, well\, that’s an origin story that needs to be claimed. What better way than an annual bash?” \nThe new event – named “6/22 – the Men in Black Birthday Bash” – will “provide a natural and necessary addition to ‘Burning Saucer\,’” said Edmiston. Burning Saucer is a 10-year-old private event held annually at Woodmont Beach that has been labeled the “Birthday Party for the Men in Black” by Den of Geek\, featured in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not\, inspired the award-winning film “The Maury Island Incident\,” landed a segment on the History Channel’s “Ancient Aliens\,” and inspired the Washington State Senate to pass Resolution 8648 to acknowledge the Maury Island Incident’s contribution to Washington history and culture. \n“We think it’s time for our larger community to experience some of this quirky merger of history\, mythology\, and fun\,” said Edmiston. “Members of MIIHS have been advocating for a Men (and Women) in Black cosplay\, so everyone attending 6/22 is likely to be dressed in some version of black and white.” However\, Edmiston added\, this is not a formal “black tie” event. \nTwo of Quarterdeck’s favorite music acts – JT Underwood and Paper Moon – will perform\, including a curated set of pop songs suited for the lovers of MIB mythology. Many details remain under wraps\, but organizers have shared that the evening will feature the Men In Black Birthday Bash Awards (the “MIBBBY’s”) to celebrate outstanding contributions to Washington State mythology – and to acknowledge the evening’s best men-and-women-in-black styles. \nThe 6/22 party is ideal for the Quarterdeck\, according to owner Ken Rogers. \n“We built this business to provide a place for community to gather\, and our music and history events have showcased how magical ‘creating community’ can be\,” said Rogers. “This event – 6/22 – checks all the boxes our customers seem to love – enjoying great beverages with friends old and new\, while sharing a memorable experience with a world-class view.” \nAccording to Rogers\, Quarterdeck navigated the pandemic in part with a transition to full-time usage of its outdoor spaces\, allowing for frequent live performances and events that include music\, readings\, crafts\, tastings\, and more recently\, a series of four sold-out “story pubs” highlighting local tales. Rogers learned how events at Quarterdeck cultivate repeat demand. “When we have a successful band\, tasting\, storyteller\, or arts and crafts event\, we see an audience build and they ask for more. On the flip side\, our ‘talent’ seems to love our customers – and they want to come back to perform again. We see the 6/22 event\, this year\, as the launch of 6/22\, every year\, because the story is so steeped in history\, pride\, and entertainment.” \nWHAT: 6/22 – the Men in Black Birthday Bash \nWHEN: Wednesday\, June 22\, 2022; doors open at 5:30 p.m.\, and the “Great Synchronization” is set for 6:22 p.m. \nWHERE: Quarterdeck – 22307 Dock Ave. S. Burning Saucer\, is a private community celebration of Puget Sound’s most infamous alleged UFO sighting that features the annual “telling of the tale\,” as well as a serious dose of comedy\, camaraderie\, and actual history\, all followed by that famous\, flaming\, flying saucer. SUMMARY:Volunteers needed to protect newly planted cedars and firs in North SeaTac Park Sun.\, June 19
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to protect newly planted cedars and firs in North SeaTac Park this coming Sunday\, June 19\, 2022\, from 10 a.m. – Noon. \nMeet near the small parking lot near Des Moines Memorial Dr. S. and S. 128th Street (map below) at 10 a.m.. If you arrive after the event starts and don’t see others\, please call Noemie at 253-653-6028. \nHere’s more info from organizers: \nLots of helping hands are needed to remove blackberry\, ivy\, and thistles that are growing near newly-planted douglas firs and western cedars. We’re at a key time in the spring when we can remove weeds before they flower and dig up blackberries while they’re still small. The weather is forcast to be coolish (low to mid 60s – partly sunny) and the ground should still be soft enough to make the pulling and digging easier. \nA year ago this site\, a field near the picnic shelter at the north end of the park\, was waist high in blackberry bushes. Those were mowed down and then\, over months of work parties\, many dozens of blackberry roots were dug out and new trees planted. Most of those new trees are thriving – with bright green needles growing at the tips. But they’re being surrounded by invasive weeds that are making a come-back. \nRIght now\, there are 20 spots and\, so far\, no sign ups other than the organizer – so there’s lots of room! These are fun\, work-at-your-own-pace events that help keep a healthy forest canopy and a lively welcoming park in this part of our city. It’s work that really matters! \nOnline registration is encouraged but you can sign up in person at the event. \nThe photos are from our most recent event at the S. 136th Street site on May 29. The first photo is the “before” of an ivy covered tree. Click on it to see the “after” and the whole work group. \n \n \n“See you under the trees!” \nRegistration and details are here: https://seatac.greencitypartnerships.org/event/50/ \nNorth SeaTac Park is located at S. 128th Street and Des Moines Memorial Dr. S.:

SUMMARY:Free cargo nets will be available at Bow Lake transfer station on Saturday\, June 4
DESCRIPTION:King County’s Solid Waste Division has partnered with the Washington State Department of Transportation to offer free cargo nets to customers at the Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 4\, 2022\, as well as the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 11. \nThe events are part of the annual “Secure Your Load Day” to promote safety by encouraging drivers to properly secure materials in their vehicles. \nIn recognition of “Secure Your Load Day\,” King County’s Solid Waste Division and the Washington State Department of Transportation are offering free cargo nets to customers at the Shoreline and Bow Lake recycling and transfer stations. \nThe event supports King County’s ongoing work to remind drivers to properly secure their loads with ropes\, netting\, or straps\, particularly when transporting oversized items such as furniture\, equipment\, or debris. A load is secure when nothing can slide\, shift\, or fall onto the roadway\, or become airborne. Securing your load helps keep roadways safe and prevents litter. \nFree cargo nets will be available at Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers are encouraged to register for their cargo net in advance to avoid potentially long wait times. \nSecure Your Load  is a national effort championed by King County resident Robin Abel\, whose daughter suffered severe injuries when an unsecured load fell from a vehicle and struck her vehicle. \nAll loads transported on every roadway must be secured\, even if someone is transporting materials in or on their vehicle for a short distance and at low speeds. These simple tips for securing loads can save lives: \n\n\n\nPlace lighter items lower and heavier items on top to help keep everything in place.\nTie down your load using rope\, netting\, straps\, or chains. Fasten large items directly to your vehicle.\nConsider covering the entire load with a tarp or netting. Make sure any covering is securely tied down.\nDon’t overload your vehicle or trailer.\nDouble-check that your load is secure.\n\n\n\nFor more information about securing your load\, visit the King County Solid Waste Division’s website at kingcounty.gov/secure-your-load.

SUMMARY:City of SeaTac to release salmon into Des Moines Creek on Saturday\, May 14
DESCRIPTION:Salmon raised by the City of SeaTac will be released into the wild into Des Moines Creek this Saturday\, May 14\, 2022 at 11 a.m. \nThis is the third year in a row that the city has raised salmon for release into the wild. \nSalmon are an important part of the Pacific Northwest Ecosystem and have been for hundreds of years. The public will be able to participate in counting the salmon and watch as they are released them into the stream. \nA shuttle will be available to transport people from Angle Lake Park to the site starting at 10:30 a.m. because parking is limited at the park. \nWHEN: Saturday\, May 14\, 2022: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nWHAT: SeaTac Public Works will release 250 salmon the City raised at the SeaTac Community Center into the wild via Des Moines Creek (map below). \nWHERE: Des Moines Creek Trail 2151 S. 200th Street:

SUMMARY:Help 'Stamp Out Hunger' by leaving food donations at your mailbox on Saturday\, May 14
DESCRIPTION:The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ national food drive on Saturday\, May 14. \nNALC’s food drive\, which was first held in 1983\, helps feed millions of Americans. \nThis is the country’s largest one-day food drive\, and provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need by leaving donations of non-perishable food next to your mailbox on May 14. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes\, and distribute them to local food banks\, pantries\, shelters and churches. \nThe Letter Carriers’ food drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10\,000 cities and towns in all 50 states\, the District of Columbia\, Puerto Rico\, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Hunger affects 1 in 8 Americans\, including millions of children\, senior citizens and veterans. \nIn the 30 years since it began\, the food drive has collected about 1.82 billion pounds of food for struggling residents. \nThe need is as great as ever\, given the pandemic-caused economic dislocations of the past two years. The traditional food drive is returning this year after a two-year hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020 and 2021\, it was replaced by NALC’s donor drive\, in which those wishing to help made online donations to local food pantries. \n“Letter carriers are a part of every neighborhood in the nation\,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said\, “and we see the growing need for food assistance in our communities. On Saturday\, May 14\, NALC invites everyone to participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Together\, we can help stamp out hunger in America.” \nThe timing is important\, with food banks\, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter holidays and with summer approaching\, when most school meal programs are suspended. \nOn May 14\, as they deliver mail\, the nation’s 200\,000 letter carriers will collect the donations that residents have left near their mailboxes. People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods\, such as canned soup\, canned vegetables\, canned meats and fish\, pasta\, rice or cereal next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on Saturday. The food donations stay in each community\, going to help local residents. \nSeveral national partners are assisting NALC in the food drive: the U.S. Postal Service\, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)\, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association\, Vericast\, United Way Worldwide\, the AFL-CIO\, Valpak\, the Kellogg Co. and CVS Health. \nPeople who have questions about the drive in their area should ask their letter carrier\, contact their local post office\, or go to https://www.nalc.org/community-service/food-drive\, facebook.com/StampOutHunger or twitter.com/StampOutHunger.
