SUMMARY:Free cargo nets will be available at Bow Lake transfer station on Saturday\, June 4
DESCRIPTION:King County’s Solid Waste Division has partnered with the Washington State Department of Transportation to offer free cargo nets to customers at the Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 4\, 2022\, as well as the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 11. \nThe events are part of the annual “Secure Your Load Day” to promote safety by encouraging drivers to properly secure materials in their vehicles. \nIn recognition of “Secure Your Load Day\,” King County’s Solid Waste Division and the Washington State Department of Transportation are offering free cargo nets to customers at the Shoreline and Bow Lake recycling and transfer stations. \nThe event supports King County’s ongoing work to remind drivers to properly secure their loads with ropes\, netting\, or straps\, particularly when transporting oversized items such as furniture\, equipment\, or debris. A load is secure when nothing can slide\, shift\, or fall onto the roadway\, or become airborne. Securing your load helps keep roadways safe and prevents litter. \nFree cargo nets will be available at Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station on Saturday\, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers are encouraged to register for their cargo net in advance to avoid potentially long wait times. \nSecure Your Load  is a national effort championed by King County resident Robin Abel\, whose daughter suffered severe injuries when an unsecured load fell from a vehicle and struck her vehicle. \nAll loads transported on every roadway must be secured\, even if someone is transporting materials in or on their vehicle for a short distance and at low speeds. These simple tips for securing loads can save lives: \n\n\n\nPlace lighter items lower and heavier items on top to help keep everything in place.\nTie down your load using rope\, netting\, straps\, or chains. Fasten large items directly to your vehicle.\nConsider covering the entire load with a tarp or netting. Make sure any covering is securely tied down.\nDon’t overload your vehicle or trailer.\nDouble-check that your load is secure.\n\n\n\nFor more information about securing your load\, visit the King County Solid Waste Division’s website at kingcounty.gov/secure-your-load.

SUMMARY:Volunteers needed to protect newly planted cedars and firs in North SeaTac Park Sun.\, June 19
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to protect newly planted cedars and firs in North SeaTac Park this coming Sunday\, June 19\, 2022\, from 10 a.m. – Noon. \nMeet near the small parking lot near Des Moines Memorial Dr. S. and S. 128th Street (map below) at 10 a.m.. If you arrive after the event starts and don’t see others\, please call Noemie at 253-653-6028. \nHere’s more info from organizers: \nLots of helping hands are needed to remove blackberry\, ivy\, and thistles that are growing near newly-planted douglas firs and western cedars. We’re at a key time in the spring when we can remove weeds before they flower and dig up blackberries while they’re still small. The weather is forcast to be coolish (low to mid 60s – partly sunny) and the ground should still be soft enough to make the pulling and digging easier. \nA year ago this site\, a field near the picnic shelter at the north end of the park\, was waist high in blackberry bushes. Those were mowed down and then\, over months of work parties\, many dozens of blackberry roots were dug out and new trees planted. Most of those new trees are thriving – with bright green needles growing at the tips. But they’re being surrounded by invasive weeds that are making a come-back. \nRIght now\, there are 20 spots and\, so far\, no sign ups other than the organizer – so there’s lots of room! These are fun\, work-at-your-own-pace events that help keep a healthy forest canopy and a lively welcoming park in this part of our city. It’s work that really matters! \nOnline registration is encouraged but you can sign up in person at the event. \nThe photos are from our most recent event at the S. 136th Street site on May 29. The first photo is the “before” of an ivy covered tree. Click on it to see the “after” and the whole work group. \n \n \n“See you under the trees!” \nRegistration and details are here: https://seatac.greencitypartnerships.org/event/50/ \nNorth SeaTac Park is located at S. 128th Street and Des Moines Memorial Dr. S.:

SUMMARY:'6/22' Party will commemorate 1947 local origins of Men in Black
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy David Rosen\, SlickPix Photography \nA party celebrating the 75th anniversary of the world’s first encounter with the iconic “Men in Black” is set to begin precisely at 6:22 p.m.\, on Wednesday\, June 22\, 2022\, at the Quarterdeck in Des Moines. \n“Because this is the 75th anniversary of both the infamous Maury Island Incident UFO sighting and the birth of the ‘Men in Black’ story\, it made sense to put a real spotlight on this fun and stunning history\,” said Maury Island Incident Historical Society (MIIHS) co-founder Steve Edmiston. “The fact that the so-called ‘Men in Black’ originated here in the Northwest\, well\, that’s an origin story that needs to be claimed. What better way than an annual bash?” \nThe new event – named “6/22 – the Men in Black Birthday Bash” – will “provide a natural and necessary addition to ‘Burning Saucer\,’” said Edmiston. Burning Saucer is a 10-year-old private event held annually at Woodmont Beach that has been labeled the “Birthday Party for the Men in Black” by Den of Geek\, featured in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not\, inspired the award-winning film “The Maury Island Incident\,” landed a segment on the History Channel’s “Ancient Aliens\,” and inspired the Washington State Senate to pass Resolution 8648 to acknowledge the Maury Island Incident’s contribution to Washington history and culture. \n“We think it’s time for our larger community to experience some of this quirky merger of history\, mythology\, and fun\,” said Edmiston. “Members of MIIHS have been advocating for a Men (and Women) in Black cosplay\, so everyone attending 6/22 is likely to be dressed in some version of black and white.” However\, Edmiston added\, this is not a formal “black tie” event. \nTwo of Quarterdeck’s favorite music acts – JT Underwood and Paper Moon – will perform\, including a curated set of pop songs suited for the lovers of MIB mythology. Many details remain under wraps\, but organizers have shared that the evening will feature the Men In Black Birthday Bash Awards (the “MIBBBY’s”) to celebrate outstanding contributions to Washington State mythology – and to acknowledge the evening’s best men-and-women-in-black styles. \nThe 6/22 party is ideal for the Quarterdeck\, according to owner Ken Rogers. \n“We built this business to provide a place for community to gather\, and our music and history events have showcased how magical ‘creating community’ can be\,” said Rogers. “This event – 6/22 – checks all the boxes our customers seem to love – enjoying great beverages with friends old and new\, while sharing a memorable experience with a world-class view.” \nAccording to Rogers\, Quarterdeck navigated the pandemic in part with a transition to full-time usage of its outdoor spaces\, allowing for frequent live performances and events that include music\, readings\, crafts\, tastings\, and more recently\, a series of four sold-out “story pubs” highlighting local tales. Rogers learned how events at Quarterdeck cultivate repeat demand. “When we have a successful band\, tasting\, storyteller\, or arts and crafts event\, we see an audience build and they ask for more. On the flip side\, our ‘talent’ seems to love our customers – and they want to come back to perform again. We see the 6/22 event\, this year\, as the launch of 6/22\, every year\, because the story is so steeped in history\, pride\, and entertainment.” \nWHAT: 6/22 – the Men in Black Birthday Bash \nWHEN: Wednesday\, June 22\, 2022; doors open at 5:30 p.m.\, and the “Great Synchronization” is set for 6:22 p.m. \nWHERE: Quarterdeck – 22307 Dock Ave. S. Unit 1\, Des Moines\, WA 98198 \nTickets\n“6/22 – The Men in Black Birthday Bash” is on sale now. Learn more at https://www.quarterdeckdm.com. \nAbout the Maury Island Incident Historical Society\nThe annual meeting of the Maury Island Incident Historical Society\, a.k.a. Burning Saucer\, is a private community celebration of Puget Sound’s most infamous alleged UFO sighting that features the annual “telling of the tale\,” as well as a serious dose of comedy\, camaraderie\, and actual history\, all followed by that famous\, flaming\, flying saucer. Learn more at https://www.quadrant45.com/#/mauryisland. \nAbout Steve Edmiston (6/22 host; MIIHS co-founder)\nSteve is an appointee to the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau\, and has keynoted the Washington State Historical Society\, Smith Tower Rumrunners Club\, McMenamin’s History Pubs\, conferences\, festivals\, historical societies\, and business groups. He is also a business\, entertainment\, and IP attorney\, and independent film screenwriter/producer. He is credited with four feature films (including Lifetime’s Crimes of the Past)\, and his award-winning shorts include The Maury Island Incident\, The Day My Parents Became Cool\, and Thr33. \nThe Quarterdeck is located at 22307 Dock Ave. S.
