[EDITOR’S NOTEThe following is a Letter to the Editor, written and submitted by a verified Burien resident. It represents the opinion of the author, and does not necessarily reflect the views of South King Media or its staff.]

As a former social worker in Highline schools, currently working as a social worker in another district, and now serving as Deputy Mayor of SeaTac, I’ve spent years working with students and families who face real challenges every day. I know how important it is to have school board directors who truly understand those challenges and who are ready to fight for what students and educators need.

That’s why I’m voting to support Dr. Damarys Espinoza for Highline School Board.

Damarys isn’t just a leader—she’s a mom of Highline students, a first-generation college graduate with a PhD, and a tireless community advocate. She has led important work across education, government, and nonprofits, always putting kids and families first. I’ve come to know Damarys through our shared work in the community and I’ve seen her commitment up close.

I’ve seen Damarys in the community and I know she listens deeply and leads with care. She understands that academic growth doesn’t happen on its own—students need the right support in the classroom and beyond. That includes strong instruction, the services that help students engage and learn, and the stability outside of school that allows them to show up ready to succeed. Damarys is committed to making sure all of these pieces are in place so every student has what they need to thrive.

She also knows educators and staff are the heart of our schools. Damarys fights for fair pay, a voice in decisions that impact their work, and the resources they need to support students every day.

From my experience working alongside her, Damarys has the character, vision, and dedication to make real change happen. Since joining the board in March 2025, she’s already shown she’s ready to lead with heart and results.

Our students and families deserve a school board director who will stand with them every step of the way. That’s why I’m voting to support Dr. Damarys Espinoza, and I hope you will too.

Sincerely,
Iris Guzmán, MSW
