A 31-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday, Sept. 20 in Des Moines, prompting a homicide investigation and the closure of a portion of Marine View Drive South, according to the Des Moines Police Department.

Officers responded at about 1:55 a.m. to a reported shooting in the 22300 block of Marine View Drive South downtown (map below).

When officers arrived, they found the man suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately began providing first aid. Medics later arrived and continued lifesaving efforts, but sadly, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was not found at the scene and investigators believe the person responsible fled the area. Des Moines police detectives are working to identify and locate the suspect.

“This remains an active investigation, and further details are unavailable at this time,” police said.

Marine View Drive South was closed between South 222nd Street and South 223rd Street while detectives investigated and processed the scene. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Police Chief Releases Statement

Des Moines Police Chief Ted Boe released the following statement about this tragedy:

“Last night we had a senseless act of violence in our community, resulting in the death of a 31-year-old man. This was not a random act but rather a shooting following a dispute between two individuals. Our detectives are working the case, interviewing witnesses and reviewing all technology at their disposal to identify the suspect. We are supported by Washington State Patrol’s specialized team in processing the crime scene evidence and the King County Prosecutor is working alongside us to make sure the suspect is not only located but successfully held accountable for their actions.

“I want to express my condolences to the victim’s family. You have my commitment that Des Moines PD won’t stop until the suspect is held accountable. To my community, I know events like this cause fear and rightfully so. We do not believe there is an ongoing threat to our residents at this time.
