REMINDER: The Kent Downtown Partnership’s Cajun Fest will take place from 2–7 p.m. in downtown Kent this Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024.

The free outdoor festival – held downtown at Burlington Green-Yangzhou Park (map below) – promises a lively celebration of Cajun culture with music, food, and interactive activities for all ages.

Cajun Fest will feature a variety of performances throughout the day, starting with Swamp Thang on the Main Stage from 2–2:45 p.m. Simultaneously, the Dixieland Kings will perform in front of Altha’s Louisiana Cajun Store, and youth can participate in Bayou Band Lessons, where they’ll learn to play Cajun instruments like washboards and canjos.

The schedule continues with a performance by Zydeco Locals on the Main Stage from 3–4 p.m.

At 4 p.m., America’s First Corps Band will lead the Second Line Parade, a traditional New Orleans-style procession.

Following the parade, Lady A will bring the blues to the Main Stage from 4:25–5:20 p.m., and the event will culminate with Bayou Envie’s performance from 5:35–7:00 p.m.

New this year, Cajun Fest will offer Bayou Band Lessons for youth, providing an opportunity for young participants to try their hand at playing unique Cajun instruments. The lessons will use a play-by-number system, making it accessible for children who may not be familiar with traditional sheet music. Volunteers are still needed to assist with disinfecting instruments between uses, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

“We’re excited to offer these interactive music lessons, and we encourage everyone to come early and get involved,” organizers said. “It’s a hoot, and a great way to introduce kids to the joy of music.”
