Community members concerned about the proposed expansion of Sea-Tac Airport (SEA) attended a recent “No Sea-Tac Airport Expansion” webinar (see video below), where environmental advocates discussed the health and climate risks posed by the Port of Seattle’s Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP).
Led by the 350 Seattle Aviation Team, a local climate advocacy group, the webinar presented data on pollution, health impacts, and environmental justice issues associated with SEA’s growth plans.
The SAMP, initiated in 2018 and currently open for public comment through Dec. 13, 2024, proposes 31 new projects for SEA, including an additional terminal, 19 gates, and expanded fuel storage. Supporters argue these changes are essential to accommodate passenger growth, but critics warn of increased air and noise pollution affecting neighboring communities.
Dr. Laura Gibbons of 350 Seattle cited studies indicating significant health effects in communities surrounding SEA, including respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
“Aviation emissions impact health severely,” Gibbons said, highlighting the need for sustainable alternatives rather than further expansion. SEA is responsible for an estimated 24% of Seattle’s total greenhouse gas emissions, and the percentage grows annually, further exacerbating climate risks.
Advocates, including Brandon Bowersox-Johnson, co-leader of 350 Seattle’s aviation team, emphasized the importance of public comments to push for a more comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
“We believe these projects’ impacts are significant enough to demand a full EIS,” Bowersox-Johnson said.
The Port of Seattle has extended the public comment deadline from Dec. 5 to Dec. 13, 2024, allowing residents to express concerns about pollution, environmental justice, and traffic congestion impacts.
Community members can submit comments electronically or in writing, calling for greater accountability and environmental protections.
