SeaTac City Councilmember Peter Kwon has been elected to the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors.

Kwon’s election was confirmed by NLC’s membership during the organization’s 2024 City Summit in Tampa, Florida. He will serve a two-year term, providing strategic direction and guidance on federal advocacy, governance, and membership initiatives.

Kwon, who is currently in his ninth year on the SeaTac City Council, brings extensive experience to his new role. He previously served as President of NLC’s Asian Pacific American Municipal Officials (APAMO) for two consecutive terms and will continue in a leadership capacity as Immediate Past President.

“I’m honored to be working with elected champions across our nation to prioritize and advocate for our local communities and neighborhoods as NLC celebrates 100 years,” Kwon said.

The National League of Cities, the nation’s largest organization representing cities, their leaders, and municipal staff, focuses on advocating for local government priorities in Washington, D.C., by building strong federal-local partnerships. The NLC Board of Directors, made up of leaders selected by a 15-member nominating committee and confirmed by a vote of the full membership, meets three times annually in March, June, and November to guide the organization’s strategic vision.

“The Board of Directors is integral to developing the vision and priorities for the National League of Cities,” said Sharon Weston Broome, Mayor-President of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and current NLC President. “I am thrilled to work shoulder-to-shoulder with this outstanding group of local leaders as they share their knowledge and experience working with the residents of our nation’s cities, towns, and villages to build stronger communities.”

The announcement came during the NLC’s annual City Summit, which drew more than 4,000 mayors, councilmembers, and other delegates from nearly every state and the District of Columbia. This year’s summit marked the organization’s 100th anniversary, celebrating a century of strengthening local government and addressing pressing challenges faced by cities, towns, and villages nationwide.

As a member of the NLC Board of Directors, Kwon will help steer the organization’s advocacy efforts and promote innovative solutions to issues affecting communities across the country.
