At its Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2025 meeting, the SeaTac City Council authorized City Manager Jonathan Young to sign off on expenditures pertaining to the mitigation, restoration, repair, and reconstruction of City Hall due to water damage incurred on Feb. 28, 2025.

The damage is due to a water supply pipe bursting in the second-floor women’s restroom causing flooding in and around the area at City Hall, including the first-floor women’s restroom.

Continual efforts are being made by vendors and staff to repair the burst pipe and mitigate water damage. The flooding has impacted the second-floor hallway and lobby areas and the women’s restroom on floors one and two.

These recent troubles come on the heels of significant flooding issues that caused damage to all three floors of City Hall in July 2024.

That flood was caused by the activation of a fire sprinkler on the third floor and resulted in several inches of water spread through the first-floor lobby, courtroom, and City Council Chambers, forcing a temporary shutdown of City Hall.

While City Hall recovered from the July flood, the cost of mitigating the damage from the burst pipe in February is estimated at approximately $100,000.

The motion to authorize the City Manager to sign off on the expenditure passed unanimously and without comment, save for Mayor Mohamed Egal who said:

“It seems to me that we all love our City Hall. And this will tell us that we need actually a new City Hall.”
