In his 2025 State of the City address on May 7, 2025, SeaTac Mayor Mohamed Egal emphasized stewardship, sustainability, and equity while unveiling a major proposal to permanently preserve North SeaTac Park — a key environmental and recreational asset for the community.

“This year, our theme is stewardship,” Mayor Egal said at the SeaTac Community Center. “It is about care — care for our environment, for sharing the spaces that bring us together, and most of all, care for one another.”

The mayor announced that the city is formally offering to acquire North SeaTac Park from the Port of Seattle (read more here). A letter of intent pledges investment in park improvements in exchange for a transfer of ownership. The move follows federal regulatory changes and a 2024 directive by Port commissioners to explore options for permanent preservation.

“Can you imagine that trees that have nurtured and protected us cut to the ground? Trails where families have walked and laughed paved over?” Egal said. “Tonight, we will convey a plan that will allow the Port commissioners to fulfill their promises to our shared community.”

North SeaTac Park spans 214 acres and provides extensive recreation opportunities, including a BMX track, botanical gardens, and walking trails. Community members shared testimonials about the park’s significance during the presentation.

The mayor also reviewed major milestones from 2024 and outlined goals for 2025–26, including:

  • Building a new civic campus
  • Updating environmental regulations
  • Expanding small business and child care initiatives
  • Breaking ground on a new Des Moines Creek trailhead and inclusive playground
  • Investing in infrastructure improvements ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

In public safety, SeaTac added K-9 units, a new fire engine, and 10 new police officers.

Human services supported over 100 asylum seekers with emergency shelter, transportation, and meals.

“We remain committed to putting people first, listening closely, and boldly building the future we want to create together,” Egal said.
